Chersonesan Expedition's report of the excavations of the Basilica on a Hill in 1973 (west area of the ancient city of Chersonesos)
Year: 1973
Author
S. A. Belyayev
Description

In 1973, Chersonesan Expedition workedin two stages, divided by a short period of time: from June 25 to July 20, and from September 25 to October 30. This situation, as well as considerable change in plan of the expedition's work were reasoned by the fact that its head S. A. Belyayev was entrusted by the directorship of the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR with de-facto management (with the position of deputy director) of Taman Expedition of the Institute because of grave illness and death in 19 August 1973 of its director, the Head of Graeco-Roman Sector of the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR N. I. Sokolskiy. This mission, that became known by him in early June only, required of him to make cardinal re-estimation of the plan of works by the Chersonesos Expedition and to refuse of doing the goals that were planned earlier.

Original plan of works of the expedition included: 1) excavations of Chersonesos itself; 2) contimuation of necropolis Ternovka II, the investigation of which started in 1972; 3) comprehensive study of cave complex Chiltera, which consisted of: a)architecrural measurment of caves, b) topographical location of caves, c) archaeological reconnaissance around the complex in order to understand its connection to archaeological sites and study of them, which should finally result in clarification of chronology for cave complex Chiltera and deeper understanding of its purpose, d) archaeological reconnaissance around Ternovka village (former Shulu) in order to search for settlements related with already known necropoleis and development of archaeological map of the area. Because of the reason stated above, the estableshed plan was restricted to the excavations in Chersonesos itself and architectural measurement of a greater part of cave complex of Chiltera and topographic location of it. Other goals had to be postponed for future years.

The works of the Chersonesos Expedition of the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Archaeology in the area of the Basilica on a Hill in Chersonesos resulted in the large area in and around the basilica was cleaned off the backfills from 1890 excavations, the limits and depth of deposition of the ancient layer were dscovered, basilica walls were unearthed, and new, rather important features of its architecture were uncovered, very interesting marble fragments were found.
