Ancient city of Chersonesos → South area

South Area is an elevated section of plateau (in the west and centre) getting low abruptly to the so-called Teatralnaya Ravine in the east section of the area. The limits of the area are longitudinal (north) street I on the north-west, west fortification wall (cur-tain walls 8–9) on the south-west, south fortification wall (curtain walls 10–15) on the south and south-east, transverse street 15, Main (longitudinal) street, and transverse streetl 12 on the east. We should point out that nowadays a great part of the area (curtain walls 10–13, a section of the main street) is buried below massive reinforced-concrete constructions of coast artillery battery no. 12.

This area includes one of the three churches unearthed in 1827 by military officer Kruze. In the late nineteenth century, engineers A.L. Berthier Delagarde (in 1885) and M.I. Garaburda (in 1893–1894) excavated there prior to construction of the seaside artillery battery. Later on, this area was explored by K.K. Kostsyushko-Valyuzhinich and R.Kh. Leper, and, in the Soviet Period, by N.V. Pyatysheva, O.I. Dombrovskiy, V.A. Kutaysov, M.I. Zolotaryov, Ye.A. Parshina, L.V. Sedikova, and others.

During this period, ruins of residential quarters and churches (Reliquary Church, Four-Apsidal Church, Five-Apsidal Church, and others), Greco-Roman theatre, public baths from the Roman Period, and a large city water reservoir have been uncovered. Nowadays, this area of the ancient city is excavated by two joint teams: Ukrainian-Polish one investi-gates around the Five-Apsidal Church (it is headed by Ye.Yu. Klyonina and A. Bernadski) and Ukrainian-US one digs around the Water Reservoir (headed by L.V. Sedikova , J. Carter and A. Rabinowitz).
